Holding Tanks 101
Holding Tank Basics
Whether you are a seasonal camper with a park model or a transient camper with an RV, learning how to manage your grey water, black water, and wastewater systems is an essential part of owning your home away from home. Here are some tips and reminders about HOLDING TANK maintenance
- It’s best to dump holding tanks every 3-5 days or when tank levels reach three-quarters full.
- Dumping often reduces the likelihood of waste buildup that could cause clogs, odors, or misreading sensors.
- Holding tanks can become clogged with sludge. This is the result of liquid/wastewater flowing from the outflow pipe to the drainage area, but the undissolved toilet paper or solid waste doesn’t break down. This typically leads to sewage backup.
- Use plenty of water each time you use the toilet.
- Use plenty of water when you use tank treatments that help break down the waste and toilet paper.
- If you don’t use enough water, solids can pile up in the bottom of the tank and accumulate until flushing the tank completely becomes impossible. This is both a gross and expensive repair.
- Never manipulate the sewer connections at a campground.
- When making reservations find out if the campground has a dump station or book a site with a sewer connection.
