Announcement: Fishing 2017-Catch & Keep!
As you may know, we had a professional analysis of our lake last fall. It provided us with an in depth understanding of Fish Lake habitats. Our fish population is growing, in part, due to the catch & release status we imposed after the 2013 winter caused a fish kill. To support that process we’ll be carrying out a number of initiatives this season. Some of these include; stocking the lake with fingerling northern pike, continued harvest and removal of carp through fishing and restoring catch and keep status starting June 17th, 2017. The new limits below will be posted at the lake and in Registration/Concessions.
- Harvest 3 bass per day under 14″… release all bass over 14″
- 5 bluegill per day
- 5 crappie per day
- 5 yellow perch per day
Campers can enjoy catch and keep limits as well as help the Fish Lake habitat with the catch and removal of carp. We look forward to hosting several, campers only Carp Fishing Tournaments this season. Tournament participation will be free, rowboats and lifejackets use will also be free of charge (an adult must sign a waiver and occupy the boat) and we’ll provide a bag to hold carp that are caught. We’ll sell corn (the preferred bait for carp) for $1. The heaviest bag of carp will win $25 in Fish Lake Beach bucks-redeemable at Registration/Concessions. NOTE: Participants over 15 must have a current IDNR license.
2016 Catch and Release Only
Fish Lake has Northern pike, large mouth bass, bluegills, crappies, and catfish.
Night crawlers, tackle and Illinois fishing licenses* are available in the registration office, across from the beach. Fishing is permitted from the shore, floating piers or boat. *IDNR requires fishing licenses for individuals 16 and older.
Why Catch & Release? Below freezing temperatures of winter, 2013 severely hampered the growth of vegetation necessary to oxygenate the water, causing fish to suffocate. This phenomenon was experienced throughout the region as ponds and lakes reported full or partial fish die-offs. As a result, we’ve been advised to remain ‘catch and release’ to allow the fish population to normalize. Carp may be caught and kept or dropped off at registration for disposal.
Picnic and play on our beach! Find a spot to spread out a blanket on the beach or picnic on a table in the shade. The beach has grills and we have charcoal for sale in Concessions.
Fish Lake Beach Concessions is just steps away from the beach. Let our smiling staff serve you fresh coffee, lunch or snacks. Concessions sells hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, hot pretzels, pizza, chips, candy, bottled water, soft drinks, yummy soft serve ice cream and Fish Lake Beach souvenir t-shirts and totes.
Glass and glass bottles are not permitted on the beach. For health and safety reasons, pets are not permitted on the beach.
